Many people are faced with the prospect of dentures during their lifetime. It can be a little daunting just because it is new and unfamiliar, but you shouldn’t be anxious about eating with a new set of teeth. There are several tips and tricks you can use to make it a simpler task and soon enough it will require no forethought at all.
Slow Down
Just like anything new, eating with artificial teeth will require practice and patience. The best thing to do is to start off slowly with bite sized pieces. Gravitate more towards softer foods in the beginning until you get used to eating with your new teeth. It is also best to avoid foods that are overly sticky, like caramel and hard candy. Chewing on both sides of your mouth will help you balance things out.
Have Fun with It
This is a new adventure and it will be as fun as you make it. Try new foods and different recipes to expand your options in the beginning. If certain items seem easier to eat, then eat them. Explore your palate with different herbs and spices. Get in the kitchen with someone you love and have fun making something new.
Build Confidence
As you learn to eat with your new teeth, slowly introduce different foods, carefully avoiding gum and small seeds which may find their way under a denture. Remember, you are relearning this whole eating process. Make a meal plan which slowly introduces firmer foods as you begin to operate more confidently. It is also best to chew with the larger molars rather than the front teeth. Chewing with the front teeth can make dentures unstable and cause them to move around.
