Sedation Dentistry: Will I remember anything?

Our dentist offers sedation dentistry through nitrous oxide or oral sedation. Patients request sedation for a variety of reasons; we will discuss your options designed to maximize your comfort and safety.

Nitrous Oxide

Often referred to as “laughing gas” nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen and delivered to the patient via a nasal cone. It is safe for children and adults and is considered a very mild sedative. The patient becomes relaxed in minutes allowing the dentist to proceed with treatment such as teeth cleaning, dental decay repair, periodontal care, and restorative work such as placing a dental crown.

Before proceeding with these types of treatments, the dentist will often provide an additional numbing anesthetic; but some patients are so fearful of needles, they require nitrous oxide to relax. Just before dental work is completed, the nitrous oxide is terminated and the patient is restored to normal right away. The gas does not stay in the system allowing the patient to resume normal activity immediately.

With nitrous oxide the patient is very relaxed, but remains conscious and is able to respond to the dentist’s instructions.

Oral Sedation

This type of sedation requires a consultation with your dentist prior to treatment to make sure you are a good candidate for oral sedation. A prescription strength medication is provided to be taken at home about an hour before your dental appointment. Because of this, you will require transportation both to and from your dental visit.

Upon arrival, additional medication is provided to advance your state of tranquility. The patient is continually monitored throughout their appointment.

Why do patients request oral sedation? This is ideal for individuals who suffer from severe anxiety, can’t sit or recline for an extended period, or are mentally or physically challenged; oral sedation is a solution that allows those patients to undergo dental treatment.

Although patients remain conscious throughout their appointment, many report that they have little to no recollection of their dental procedure. At the conclusion of their treatment, patients continue to be monitored until they are fully alert. Patients are likely to feel groggy for several hours so are advised to go home for the balance of the day.

Whether nitrous oxide or oral sedation are chosen, both of these options relax the patient allowing them to receive much needed dental care. For more information or to schedule a visit, contact Tate Family Dentistry today.
